Lactation Services / Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a natural process, however most women need assistance and guidance in order to be successful. The Lactation Department employs registered nurses who are board certified lactation consultants. These consultants are dedicated to helping mothers successfully breastfeed and bond with their infants, and are available on the mother-baby unit 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A prenatal breastfeeding class is offered that familiarizes the expectant parents with the process of milk production, the benefits of breastfeeding and the feeding and behavioral patterns of the breastfed newborn.

Much has been written about the health benefits a child receives from breastfeeding. Lower incidents of gastro-intestinal problems, ear infections, some childhood cancers, as well as higher IQ are just a few that are attributed to breast milk.

Studies have also indicated that breastfeeding can reduce the mother's risk of premenopausal breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis.

Currently, approximately 80% of all U.S. women start breastfeeding, but of those moms, approximately 60% do not reach their own goals. In efforts to improve these rates, Baby Cafés offer support on all aspects of breastfeeding and its impact on daily life – from prenatal to weaning, as well as assistance with pumping and maintaining supply if moms return to work outside the home.
