Perinatal Medicine Service for High-Risk Expectant Mothers & Infants

The WNY Regional Perinatal Center and Maternal-Fetal Medicine Department at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo specializes in management and consultation of high-risk pregnancy through a range of screening, monitoring and treatment services. 

The WNY Regional Perinatal Center is available 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week for patients and physicians.

The center specializes in:

  • Preconception Counseling
  • Genetic evaluation by a certified genetic counselor
  • Ultrasound screening (targeted anomaly exams, nuchal translucency) including 3D/4D
  • Management of multiple gestation
  • Diabetic monitoring and testing
  • Fetal anomalies, e.g. congenital diaphragmatic hernia, abdominal wall defects, lung lesions, twin transfusion syndrome, skeletal dysplasia
  • Amniocentesis/PUBS/fetal transfusions
  • Prenatal consult with a Neonatalogist and Pediatric Specialists including surgery, urology, neurosurgery, cardiology, orthopedics
  • Social work
  • Nutritional counseling

The goal of the Perinatal Center and Maternal Fetal Medicine Department is to provide a Center of Excellence for the community that will ensure women with pregnancy complications can have all of their high risk needs met. Patients can be assured they will receive the highest standard care offered in a compassionate, multidisciplinary setting.

Clinical Genetics

Clinical genetics professionals can help to diagnose, manage, and facilitate genetic testing for individuals with any of the following:

  • A known or suspected genetic condition in the individual or family member
  • Birth Defects
  • Developmental delay, mental retardation or learning disabilities

Prenatal Genetics

For pregnant women or couples planning a pregnancy, the Division of Genetics and Maternal Fetal Medicine can provide risk information to individuals with a personal or family history of one or more of the following:

  • Recurrent miscarriage, stillbirth, or infertility
  • A previous child or other family member with a genetic condition and/or birth defect(s)
  • Specific ethnic background with a higher incidence of a particular condition (i.e. cystic fibrosis or sickle cell)
  • An abnormal ultrasound finding
  • Exposure during pregnancy
  • Micro amp testing

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo operates the region's largest and most advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The team of specialists in the NICU delivers the most state-of-the-art care available for the most critically ill newborns. Neonatologists and other physician specialists, neonatal nurse specialists and nurse practitioners, respiratory, occupational, and physical therapists, nutritionists, psychologist, social workers and pharmacists are all part of this specialized team.
